Tucked away down a small side street are the workshops of Dave Wood of Valentine Wood & Sons, French polishers & antique restoration.

Dave was sitting in his workshop doorway after a days work when I asked if I could take some photos. He said he’d already been photographed by a photographer (Niall McDiarmid) and his picture is on display on the sea front.

We talked French polishing and local rivalry, people with more money than sense and councils with no money or sense, peeling sign writing and the odd reference to stripping—all to the sweet aroma of fresh lacquer.
